Blissfield, Whiteford women to square off in finals

The Blissfield High School women’s basketball team defeated the Britton Deerfield Lady Patriots 56-46 in round two of district action at Blissfield Wednesday, Feb. 27.

BD had arrived at the second round after winning Monday night, but Blissfield had drawn a first-round bye.

Whiteford’s Lady Bobcats downed the SMCC Kestrals in game two Wednesday, 60-50, to advance to district finals Friday night. Whiteford had won their round-one game Monday.

The Royals will face off against Whiteford in the district finals at Blissfield High School Friday night for the championship.

Blissfield buses vandalized

It was fortunate Blissfield did not have school Friday after it was discovered that vandals had cut at least 22 tires on several school buses early Friday morning. If school had not been canceled, buses would not have been able to transport students. Two males dressed in dark clothing and dark hoodies were seen vandalizing the buses and cutting tires on security camera footage. Cords attached to the diesel engines were also unplugged.

The Britton Deerfield Patriots and Whiteford Bobcats both battled their way into the second round of the district tournament. Whiteford avenged a district defeat to Summerfield from last year and the Patriots sealed a victory over Erie Mason and Cambria Handy broke the 1,000-point barrier.

It was sweet revenge for the Whiteford women’s varsity basketball squad Monday night, Feb. 25. The Lady Bobcats were knocked out of the 2012 district tournament by the Summerfield Bulldogs on Whiteford’s home court. A year later, it’s a different story as the Bobcats bullied the Bulldogs for a 59-35 first-round win.

It was a special night for the Britton Deerfield varsity women’s basketball team Monday night. The Lady Patriots locked up a 50-31 first-round victory in the district tournament over the Erie Mason Eagles, as Cambria Handy scored her 1,000th point in just her junior season.

BD plays Blissfield at 5:30 Wednesday, Feb. 27 as Blissfield drew a first-round bye.

Men’s basketball: Feb. 18-22

BRITTON DEERFIELD

The Britton Deerfield Patriots basketball team is in the midst of a winning streak they are hoping they can keep riding into the district tournament next week. The Patriots shocked the Addison Panthers Feb. 18 with a one-point win overtime, defeating them 51-50.

The Patriots carried the winning momentum into their victory against improving Tri County Conference foe, Whitmore Lake the following night beating them 61-60 at Deerfield.

BLISSFIELD

A strong third-quarter performance kept the Blissfield men’s varsity basketball squad in reach of the Erie Mason Eagles Tuesday, but the Royals were unable to complete the effort and suffered a 58-52 loss.

Blissfield may have an opportunity at redemption against the Eagles if the two meet in next week’s district tournament. The Royals open up the district tournament against Britton Deerfield at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Central.

WHITEFORD

After some tough losses the week before, the Whiteford Bobcats picked up two league wins last week. The Bobcats defeated Sand Creek Friday evening 64-53.
