Halloween Hours: UPDATE … No Rotary bonfire, but trick-or-treat a “go”

As of 2 p.m. today (Halloween), local communities are still planning on trick-or-treating taking place this evening, but the Rotary bonfire and Halloween parade have been cancelled, due to weather .

Blissfield and Riga has trick-or-treating from 5:30-7 p.m. Whiteford and the village of Deerfield have scheduled trick-or-treating from 6- 8 p.m. The Palmyra Township Fire Department Halloween Party begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m.

According to Blissfield Rotary President Andy Borchardt , all of the food and supplies purchased for this evening’s cancelled Rotary bonfire will be donated to local food banks.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS; BD at Hudson; Whiteford hosts Sterling Hts. Pkwy. Christian

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced high school football playoff district matchups Sunday evening.  Two area Tri County Conference teams’ records earned them play-off bids.
Whiteford (7-2) will play Sterling Heights Parkway Christian ((5-4) in a home game this coming weekend. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Lenawee Christian ( 7-2) and Detroit Allen  (6-2) for the Division 8 district championship.
Britton Deerfield (6-3)  will play in a a cross-county affair as they travel to Hudson most likely on Friday night for the first round in a Division 7 matchup. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Melvindale Academy for Business & Technology (5-4) and Detroit Loyola (9-0) game to advance to the regional championship.

Friday Football: Oct. 25

The Whiteford Bobcats gave the Sand Creek Aggies a 54-6 spanking Friday night to earn a share of second place in the Tri County Conference.
The ‘Cats, as well as the Britton Deerfield Patriots, will begin their state playoff quest next weekend. The Britton Deerfield Patriots ended the season Friday in a loss to the undefeated Tri County Conference champions Clinton Redskins 41-6. Mistakes and penalties plagued the Patriots who still will play at least one more week after securing a bid in the MHSAA playoffs. \
The Patriots tied Whiteford for second place in the TCC.
Blissfield played the Ida Bluestreaks tough Friday night right up until the end, but fell 42-24 to the LCAA tri-champion Bluestreaks. Ida shares the crown with Hudson and Hillsdale. It is Ida’s first league title since 1997.
Blissfield finished the season 3-6, and showed continued improvement throughout the season, but did not have enough wins for a playoff berth this year.

BOO! Halloween events planned

• Blissfield: Trick-or-treating is 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 31 Line up for the costume parade is at 7 p.m. at the Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library. The parade will commence down Lane Street to the park to the Rotary bonfire and costume judging. Hot dogs and cider will be served.

• Deerfield: 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31 Trick-or-treating village-wide. Beginning and end will be signaled by the Deerfield Township Fire Department siren.

• Palmyra: 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 31 Palmyra Township Fire Department children’s Halloween party at the Palmyra Community Center.

• Whiteford: 6-8 p.m Oct. 31 Trick-or-treat hours.

• Riga: 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 31 Trick-or-treating in village

VOLLEYBALL: Oct. 23, 2013, edition

BLISSFIELD

The Blissfield varsity volleyball team defeated the LCAA rival Onsted Wildcats at home Oct. 15. The Lady Royals defeated the Wildcats in five sets, 25-18, 19-25, 25-15, 22-25 and 17-15 in an exciting finish that went down to the wire.

Blissfield’s trip to the County Tournament resulted in victories over Britton Deerfield 25-13 and 25-9, Hudson 25-9 and 25-7, and Lenawee Christian 25-16 and 25-14. The thorn in the side of the Royals proved to be the host Maples as they defeated Blissfield in two matches, 18-25 and 15-25 and then 21-25 and 21-25.

BRITTON DEERFIELD

The Britton Deerfield varsity volleyball squad went 1-2 in pool play before losing to host Adrian in the gold bracket of the County Tournament Saturday. The Lady Patriots lost to Blissfield 13-25 and 9-25 and Adrian 17-25 and 12-25 in the first two rounds of pool play, before defeating Hudson 25-14 and 25-12. After qualifying for the gold bracket, BD was defeated by Adrian in the first round 10-25 and 16-25.

Royals march off with first place

The Blissfield High School Marching Band won first place in Class C competition at a state competition in Jenison last weekend. The band performed a show featuring classical music by Beethoven that was titled “Immortal.”

The Blissfield Marching Royals performed on their home field for the last time of the season Oct. 18, but the next day went to Jenison to repeat as first-place winners. Copyright 2013, River Raisin Publications, Inc./Marcia Loader

This is the third consecutive year the Marching Royals have won first place overall. Blissfield was also selected as the Caption Award winners for best marching, best music and best color guard.

David Grow

David B. Grow, age 65, of Blissfield, died at Hospice of Lenawee Oct. 17, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 9, 1948, to Aubrey and Delores Grow of Dayton, Ohio.

He was the second of six children. He served two tours with the U.S. Marine Corps in Force Recon. He was an electronics technician for J.C. Penney, A&D Electronics and ServMart. He enjoyed golfing, playing guitar and spending time with family.

David is survived by his children, Amanda (Daniel Jr.) Griesinger and Matthew Grow; his grandchildren Chelsey Grow, age 11, and Connor Grow, age two; and his beloved fiance and significant other, Mary Woodward.

A memorial took place Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga. A private interment will be held later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family at Blissfield State Bank c/o Mary Woodward, to cover funeral expenses, or make donations to Hospice of Lenawee.

William “Bill” Curry

RIGA – William “Bill” B. Curry, 82 of Riga passed away on Monday, October 14, 2013 at Promedica Bixby Hospital in Adrian, Michigan. He was born on November 22, 1930 in Webster Springs, West Virginia to James D. and Garnet I. (Pugh) Curry. On December 13, 1958, Bill was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Goodnoe in Novi, Michigan. She survives.

Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict from 1951 until 1954. He went to work for General Motors as a painter, retiring after 30 years of service. Bill was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga, the Lansing V.F.W. Post 701, the Military Order Of The Cootie Of The United States Supreme Pup Tent, and in earlier years the Order of the Moose Lodge, where he enjoyed trap shooting. Bill later discovered he had an artistic talent that included woodworking, drawing and painting.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his children Patricia (James) Miesse of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Scott (Linda) Curry of Starke, Fla.; one granddaughter, Amanda Butson and nine great-grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Corintha Curry and his brother, Delbert Curry.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Bill Curry took place at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2013, at the Anderson-Rudd Funeral Home in Blissfield with Pastor Joan Christoffers officiating. Military Rites were conducted by the Blissfield V.F.W. Post 10912 following the service at the funeral home. Bill’s ashes will be laid to rest in Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor. Carolyn Saxton

Carolyn A. Saxton, 75, of Blissfield, was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday evening, October 15, 2013, at ProMedica Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on March 5, 1938, in Bowling Green, Ohio to Ward and Mary (Spalt) Bettis. On July 16, 1966, Carolyn married John R. Saxton at the Presbyterian Church in Blissfield.

Carolyn was a devoted wife and mother. She offered daycare in her home for approximately 20 years, during which time she nurtured nearly 80 children. Carolyn was a faithful member of the Blissfield Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, sang in the choir and participated in the women’s ministries, most recently sewing prayer shawls and quilts for local cancer support groups. She loved to quilt and share her gift of knitting. Carolyn donated her time and gifts by making individual blankets for those in need for the Lenawee Emergency and Affordable Housing Corporation and the Catherine Cobb Domestic Violence Shelter in Adrian.

She is survived by her husband, John “Dick” Saxton of Blissfield; her three children, Michael (Karen) Saxton of Blissfield, Kristen Saxton of Portland, Ore., and Rebecca (Peter) Erdman of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, a brother, R. Kirk (Carolyn) Bettis of Adrian, and a sister, Suzanne (Jerald) Saxton of Blissfield. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

A memorial service to celebrate Carolyn’s life took place Oct. 19, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Blissfield with Rev. Robert Bidwell officiating. Blissfield’s new doctor: Meet Cara Derck D.O.

Blissfield has a new face in family medicine with Dr. Cara Derck joining Dr. William Gray’s practice.

Derck said she always wanted to practice medicine in a small community similar to the one she grew up with in Fostoria, Ohio. She said the tight-knit community of Blissfield returned her to her roots.

“I always wanted to practice medicine in a small community with a country feel to it. Blissfield reminds me of home and so do the people,” she said.
