Ronald Cannon

ADRIAN – Ronald D. Cannon, age 67, of Adrian, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Bixby Medical Center.

He was born August 26, 1946, in Adrian, Michigan, to Albert and Frances (Bieber) Cannon.  Ron graduated in 1964 from Deerfield High School where he was recognized as an All State Quarterback.

On July 3, 1976, Ron married Janet Mackey in Gaylord, Michigan, and she survives.

Ron worked at Peerless Gear and the Bud Company in Clinton.  For the past 30 years he has owned and operated Chem-Dry of Lenawee.  Ron enjoyed hunting, bowling, playing golf and the time he spent coaching football at Deerfield High School. He looked forward to monthly poker games with his friends.  Ron treasured his family and dearly loved his grandchildren.

In addition to Jan, his wife of over 37 years, he is survived by their children: Greg Cannon of Deerfield; Kirk (Anita) Taylor and Stefanie (Saul) Burciaga, both of Adrian; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; brothers, John (Marge) Cannon of Owosso, MI; and Robert (Nadine) Cannon of Deerfield, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Cannon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian with Pastor Pete Bishop officiating.  Burial will follow at Deerfield Cemetery.  Visitation will take place on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Mary DeNudt

PALMYRA – Mary Ann DeNudt, 70, of Palmyra passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Lynwood Manor in Adrian, under the care of Great Lakes Hospice.
She was born April 27, 1943 to Myron and Myrtle (Brubaker) Iffland. On April 23, 1960, she married Raymond R. DeNudt at St. Peters Church in Blissfield, and he survives.
Mary worked as a supervisor at Blissfield Elementary and also as a cashier at Family Dollar. Her most important role however, was that of wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to Raymond, her husband of over 53 years, she is survived by their children: Stephanie Viers of Deland, FL; James DeNudt of Coldwater, MI; Paul DeNudt of Toledo, OH; and Donny (Tammy) DeNudt of Wauseon, OH; a brother, Phil Iffland of Morenci; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren: Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Schmitz.
Funeral services will take place on at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Winter update: Jan. 29, 2014

From Lenawee County sheriff Jack Welch and Lenawee County Emergency Management coordinator Curtis Parsons:

The “CONDITION YELLOW,” which has been in place since 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, has been lifted as of today, Wednesday, Jan. 29. A traveler’s advisory is in effect until today and tonight to alert residents that some area roadways, particularly secondary roads, are still covered in packed snow and, in some cases, ice patches which create hazardous driving conditions.

“In the extreme low temperatures we are currently experiencing across the county, salt brine is ineffective in removing snow and ice for road surfaces,” the release stated.

BHS sports rescheduling: Jan. 29, 2014

From the Blissfield athletic director, Steve Babbitt … due to school closings Monday-Wednesday, Jan. 27-29:

The JV / varsity women’s basketball home game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29 vs. Hillsdale has been rescheduled (for the fourth time) to Monday, February 10.

The JV/varsity basketball games vs. Hudson which were set for Tuesday, Jan. 28 have been rescheduled for Monday February 17. The women will play at home and the men will play in Hudson.

Women’s basketball: Jan. 29, 2014

The Whiteford women’s varsity basketball team pulled out a pair of victories over the Clinton Redskins and Erie-Mason Eagles.

The Lady Bobcats came out on top 48-44 against Clinton Jan. 17 and trounced Erie-Mason 48-29 Jan. 21.

Blissfield wrestling: Jan. 29, 2014, edition

The Blissfield varsity wrestling team hit the mat last Wednesday and muscled its way to a 41-27 victory over Hillsdale.

The Royals also sent a trio of wrestlers to the county all-star tournament Friday at Adrian College. Representing the purple and gold were Noah Nieman, Caleb Bangerter and Dakota Underwood.

Men’s basketball: Jan. 29, 2014, edition

The Whiteford varsity men’s basketball team went 2-1 in their previous three contests. The Bobcats were edged by TCC rival Madison 47-43 Jan. 14. Whiteford responded with back-to-back wins over Clinton 77-52 (Jan. 17) and Erie-Mason 79-64 (Jan. 21).

Blissfield Bowling: Jan. 29, 2014, edition

The Blissfield men’s and women’s varsity bowling teams have been finding their winning ways on the lanes recently.

The women’s team posted a pair of wins with a 27-3 victory over Onsted (Jan. 14) and 26-4 win over Columbia Central last Tuesday.

The men’s team came up just short of defeating Onsted (Jan. 14) 17-13 but rebounded for a 17-13 win over Columbia Central last Tuesday.

Elda Griewahn

RIGA — Elda C. Griewahn, 94, of Riga, passed away peacefully Friday, January 24th, 2014 with her family by her side.  Elda was born May 8th, 1919 in Whiteford Township, Michigan.  She was the daughter of Frederick J.  and Anna (Kibler) Kopp.  She married the love of her life Guernon (Abe) Griewahn on October 27th, 1945 in Riga, Michigan.  They were married 62 years before Guernon preceded her in death in 2009.  Elda was a charter member of the Standard Extension Club.  She loved to read, do her “fancy work” (embroidery), and travel.  She and Guernon visited many wonderful places.  Their favorites were Africa, Switzerland, and Alaska. She most of all enjoyed spending time with her family. Elda and Guernon  resided  at the family Centennial Farm, the birth place of Guernon,  all their married life. She will be deeply missed by daughters Judy Treloar of Riga, Nancy Momenee of Sylvania, OH.  and Marilyn  (Michael) Coffey of Adrian, and son-in-law James Treloar of Sylvania.  She will be sadly missed by Grandchildren Todd (Michelle) Treloar, Jon (Brooke) Treloar, Jena Momenee (David Self), Tim Momenee, Corey (Rachel) Franklin, Joy Franklin (Francesco Frizzi), and Ann Bowersox.  Great grandchildren Isabella and Brayden Treloar, Tylor Garland,  Jonah, Harper, and Leo Treloar, Josie Franklin, and Allie and Gavin Bowersox. Visitation will be held   Monday, January 27th, 2014, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 Main St., Sylvania, OH. Services will be held Tuesday January 28, 2014 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 11949 Wegner Rd., Riga, MI.  Visitation will be at 10 AM with services beginning at 11 AM. Burial will take place in Riga Cemetery. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the love and care given to their mother by Charlotte Stephenson Manor and Hospice of Lenawee County. Mary Ellen Goetz

Mary Ellen Goetz, 84, of Blissfield, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at the Life Care Center in Sarasota, Fla. She was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Adrian, to Theodore and Mildred Kleindienst. She married William E. Goetz on Nov. 19, 1948, in Blissfield and he survives. Mary lived in Blissfield her whole life, wintering in Bradenton, Fla., which she loved dearly. Surviving besides her husband are her sons, David (Michelle), Larry (Marilyn), Robert (Joan) and Theodore (Jean) Goetz; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elaine. A private ceremony will be held at a later date in Blissfield.
