Blissfield area 2012 news review

As 2012 winds down, The Advance takes a look over the news of the year and shows 12 months of trials, triumphs and tragedies.

Several major decisions challenged local officials; businesses opened and others shut their doors. The community rallied around causes and new events popped up in several communities as well.

As we move forward into 2013, The Advance takes this time to reflect upon the significant and memorable events and actions of the year.

Larry Steger

MOORE HAVEN, Fla. – Larry C. Steger, age 71, of Florida, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Hospice of Lehigh Acres. He was born February 22, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Lawrence F. Steger and the late Eva Lucille (Reau) Steger. On May 18, 2001 he married Betty Anne Davis Seavey who survives. Larry served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, two sons, Benny James Steger of Bradenton, Fla.., and Bradley John Steger of Charleston, Va., one stepson, Scott (Jen) Seavey of Sarasota, Fla., a stepdaughter Kera Anne Lawson, one brother Douglas (Joyce) Steger of Moore Haven, Fla., and a sister Barbara (Dick) Hadden of Deerfield, ten grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Tree falls on Blissfield school bus

A tree fell on a Blissfield Community Schools bus this morning, sending five children to Bixby Hospital, Adrian, with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Jeff Jackson of the Palmyra Township Fire Department.

In a freak accident, a huge, rotten ash tree fell across the road and onto the school bus on Gorman Road wesk of Crockett Highway as students were being taken to school on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Royal men down Ida for season’s first win

The Blissfield men’s varsity basketball squad members have found themselves confronted with a challenging start to their 2012 season, suffering three straight losses, including a 61-27 loss to Albion Tuesday, Dec. 14.

But the Royals hit the hardwood on Friday night, Dec. 14, looking to right the ship against LCAA rival Ida. Blissfield jumped out to a 32-16 halftime lead that they wouldn’t relinquish as they held on secure their first victory of the season 61-51 over the Bluestreaks.

Royal women bowlers win first outing

The Blissfield men’s and women’s varsity bowling squads opened their first official season as a Royal varsity sport against the Onsted Wildcats Friday, Dec. 14.

The women were victorious, as they rolled their was to a 17-13 victory, while the men were defeated 27-3.

Lake leads Bobcats to pair of TCC wins

Colin Lake nailed a three-point shot with four seconds left on the clock to help the Whiteford Bobcats men’s basketball team secure a league-opening victory over TCC foe Summerfield, Tuesday , Dec. 11, with a score of 51-48.

The Bobcats furthered their winning ways Friday evening, Dec. 14, defeating Whitmore Lake 72-46.

Blissfield wrestling wins SMCC tourney

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad went 5-0 on Saturday, Dec. 15, to win the Saint Mary’s Catholic Central tournament.

Royal wrestlers defeated Inter City Baptist 66-6, host SMCC 42-36, Lasher 60-12, Tecumseh 38-30 and Southgate Anderson 42-41.

BHS cheer squads shine at Onsted

The Blissfield varsity cheer squad had a rocky start to its 2012 campaign, before rallying to a second-place finish at the Onsted Invitational Saturday, Dec. 15, coming just 1.08 points shy of vaulting themselves past the first-place Addison squad.

The Lady Royals had finished sixth out of nine teams at the Grass Lake Invitational Dec. 8, followed by a fifth-place finish at Ida Dec. 12.

The Blissfield Middle School cheer squad also competed in the Onsted Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 15, and defeated Morenci, Addison and Madison to bring home the first-place hardware.

Blissfield women win two for 5-0 record

The Blissfield women’s varsity basketball team has extended their season record to a perfect 5-0 with a 48-36 victory over the Tecumseh Indians on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and a 51-42 overtime win on their home court against the LCAA rival Ida Bluestreaks on Friday night, Dec. 14
