Mary Ellen Ickler Sayler, age 83 of Blissfield, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2014, at Promedica Bixby Hospital.
She was born August 11, 1931, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At 6 weeks she was adopted by David and Edna (Rathbun) Loar. She graduated from Blissfield High School in 1948.
On June 7, 1953, she married Howard Ickler, Sr. of Riga. He died July 7, 1964. On April 7, 1972, she married Burton Sayler. They lived on Burt’s farm till they moved to Coach Light Estates in June 1990. She drove school bus in Blissfield 28 years. She and her husband spent 22 winters at Mission, Texas until he could not travel any more.
She attended Blissfield Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children: Howard (Debbie) Ickler, Jr. of Blissfield; Cindy (Larry) Brugger of Spring Arbor; and Ron (Sandy) Sayler of Blissfield; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield with Rev. Thomas Frantz officiating. Burial followed at Ogden Township Cemetery. Visitation took place at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Katherine LaPere
Katherine M. LaPere, age 90 of Blissfield, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility.
She was born February 6, 1924 in Riga Township to Harry and Gertrude (Kuhl) Sallows.
She married John Berger in 1946, and he preceded her in death in 1982. In 1994, she was married to Joseph LaPere, and he passed away in 2001.
Kate graduated from Blissfield High School in 1994, receiving her diploma the same year as two of her grandchildren. She retired from the Blissfield Canning Company with 25 years of service. She was a former member of St. Peter’s Parish and Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and recently was a member of the West Adrian Community Church. Kate was actively involved with activities at the Bliss-Liewert Senior Center. At Lenawee Medical Care Facility she received an award for her Halloween costume this year.
She is survived by her children: Linda Mort of Adrian; Lawrence (Pamela) Berger of Blissfield; and Stanley (Sue) Berger of Morenci; step-children, Dennis (Ellen) Berger of Florida and Eileen (Dale) Trimble of Corona, MI; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Pfeffer, son-in-law, George Mort; brothers, Harold and Eddy Sallows; sisters, Betty Easterday, Viola Lewis and Marguerite Cline; and eight step-children.
Funeral services took place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield with Rev. Tedd Galloway officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday. November 12, from 9 a.m. until the service. Contributions in memory of Kate may be made to the Bliss-Liewert Senior Center. Blissfield women fall in district final
SMCC swept Blissfield three games to none to claim the class C District championship in volleyball at Erie-Mason Saturday afternoon. Scores were 25-17, 25-15 and 25-18.

Whiteford’s football playoff run ends in Morenci
The Whiteford Bobcats’ football playoff hopes were left on the field of the host Morenci Bulldogs who put a 42-22 bite on the ‘Cats in district final action Friday night.
But the Bobcats made it a fight. The game was scoreless through the first quarter, with Morenci going into halftime with just a 14-6 lead, which may have surprised some after racking up impressive point spreads in the regular season. The majority of the scoring came in the second half with Morenci putting 28 more points on the scoreboard to Whiteford’s 16 second-half point, and sealing the deal to advance in state playoff action next week.

Blissfield volleyball finals-bound
Blissfield volleyball will play in the district championship game Saturday after defeating Summerfield’s Lady Bulldogs in semi-final action. The Royals earned 25-11, 25-6 and 25-10 wins for the opportunity to face St. Mary Catholic Central in the finals at 1 p.m. on the Erie-Mason High School court.
Election 2014: BD Schools
Ben Allshouse, Yvonne Thomas and Doug Mayher were the top vote getters in the Britton Deerfield School District and will serve six year terms. Allsouse had 691 votes, Thomas had 635 and Mayher had 559 votes. Gary Judkins garnered 153 votes as a write-in candidate.
Britton Deerfield School district voters approved the non-homestead millage renewal request 768-401.
Election 2014: Riga Twp. millage
Unofficial results show Riga Township voters approved a one-mill levy request for fire equipment for the next five years. Voters approved the measure 322-153.
Election 2014: Blissfield Board of Education
Scott Abbott and Vicky Lombard will return to their seats on the Blissfield School Board. They will be joined by Tyler Wyse. Abbot received 1,571 votes, Lombard had 1,154, Wyse had 1,076 and Michael Cole had 1,024. All three are elected to serve six-year terms.

Election 2014: Blissfield Village
The Blissfield Village Council will retain all the same members but a new person will sit at the middle of the table. Ray Jones was elected village president in an unopposed race. Mark Burgermeister, Mike Gunter and Art Weeber were all elected to four-year trustee positions. Burgermeister was the overwhelming vote-getter with 723 votes. Mike Gunter received 230 write-in votes, Weeber, 151 and Daniel Mead 101 votes. All write-in votes need to approved by the Lenawee County Board of Canvassers when they meet Wednesday afternoon to be official.
Both Laura Neuman and Peggy Nieman were elected as village clerk and village treasurer.
Josephine Spiegel, Lauri Reinhardt and Mary Gregg were all re-elected to the library board.
Blissfield advances at BD’s expense in volleyball districts
The Blissfield Royals advance in district action Tuesday night, downing Britton Deerfield in in a three-game sweep.
