  • Jacob Wingerd
    ADRIAN — Jacob “John” Wingerd, 89, of Blissfield, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Lynwood Manor. He was born on October 17, 1923, in Madison Township to Charles and Mildred (Hall) Wingerd. John served his country in the Army during WW II. On February 14, 1962, he married Margaret Jacques in Blissfield. John worked at Blissfield Manufacturing for 25 years, he also helped area farmers. He enjoyed collecting tractors, stamps and coins. Survivors include his children, Doris Ostrander of Adrian, Paul Wingerd of Blissfield, Joe Wingerd of Blissfield and Dale (Audra) Wingerd of Clinton; a brother, George of Michigan, and grandchildren, Zachary Wingerd, Jessica Ringle, Jordan Wingerd, Brent Wingerd and Alexa Beckey; two great-grandchildren and special friend, Margaret Braun. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, step mother Frances, sisters Janet and Betty, brother, Art and granddaughter Kassie Wingerd. A memorial service for John was held Monday, July 1, 2013, at Tagsold Chapel, Wagley Funeral Home. Private burial will take place at a later date.   • Harley Betz

    AKRON, Ohio — Harley P. Betz, Sr., age 86, passed away July 1, 2013. He was born February, 2, 1927, in Riga, Michigan. He owned and operated Harley Sunoco Gas Station in Akron, Ohio. Preceded in death by parents, Stanley and Rose, and sisters, Erma and Sedonna, he is survived by wife, Shirley; children, Bonnie, Sonnie (Karen), Linda (Harold), Wanda (Mark), Judy; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Susie (John), Sally (Don); brothers, Homer (Donna), Herbert (Joyce); nieces, nephews and extended family. The funeral services was July 5, 2013, at Cox Funeral Home, Barberton, Ohio, with the Rev. Richard Schumacher officiating. Entombment was at Greenlawn.

  • Winnifred Terry

    PALMYRA — Winifred L. Terry, age 83, of Palmyra died peacefully at home on July 6, 2013. She was born on December 31, 1929, in Ogden Township, Michigan, to Lester and Velma (Schafer) Klump. She graduated from Blissfield High School. On June 22, 1949, she married Floyd Terry at a service at United Brethren Church of Ogden. They had three boys together: Vernon, Dale, and David. She worked at Sprunk’s Grocery Store in Blissfield and later at Sears, retiring with 25 years of service. She is survived by a sister, Marilyn (Earl) McMunn of Jasper; her sons, Vernon (Jeannie); Dale (Barbara); and David (Susan); her grandchildren, Jessica (Nathan) Bugbee, Jennifer Brewer, Neil (Sarah) Terry, Thomas VanCamp, Laura Terry, Ryan (Tiffanie) Terry, Justin Terry, and Tyler Terry; as well as 3 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, July 12, at 1 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Blissfield with Pastors Zachary Dunlap and Doug McMunn, a nephew, officiating. Visitation is immediately preceding the service from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.   • Tanya MacBeth

    DEERFIELD — Tanya Rene MacBeth, 46, of Deerfield, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

    Tanya was born on Sept. 10, 1966 in Adrian, the daughter of Jimmy and Sharon (Cilley) Hickman.  She graduated from Madison High School in 1984, and was married on Nov. 8, 1986 to Danny MacBeth.

    Tanya worked as the Human Resources and Safety Manager at Uckele Health and Nutrition of Blissfield.  She was involved with 4-H for many years, and was involved with the forming of the New Beginnings 4-H Club.  Tanya enjoyed spending time with children.

    Surviving is her husband, Danny MacBeth of Deerfield, sons Tommy and Matthew MacBeth, daughter RaeLynne MacBeth, parents Jimmy Hickman of Tecumseh and Sharon Hickman of Adrian, brother Darren Hickman of Adrian, many nieces and nephews, and close friend Lisa Rivera of Millheim, PA.  Tanya was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Mary Hickman, and Everett and Annie Cilley.

    A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at the Wagley Funeral Home Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield, with Rev. Pete Valdez officiating.  Burial will follow at Riga Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the funeral home.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Lenawee, or to the Lenawee 4-H Council.

  • Ralph Staup

    Staup, Ralph William Jr. (Mike), age 68 of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Blissfield, MI passed away Friday morning, June 7, 2013. Mike was a graduate of Michigan State University but became an avid Vol fan. He was the founder and owner of Direct Mail Services in Knoxville. Mike is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ann Staup; daughters, Angela Seward of Manassas, VA, Lisa Groves of Ft Wayne, IN and Jill Keiffer of Carmel, IN; three terrific sons-in-law; seven wonderful grandchildren; brother, Todd; sisters, Judy and Becky; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. on Monday at Resthaven Cemetery in Dandridge for graveside services with Brother Mike Hensley officiating.   • Richard Kastel

    ADRIAN – Richard Glen Kastel, 84, of Riga, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility.

    He was born June 28, 1928, in Riga, Michigan the son of Frank and Alta (Walters) Kastel.  During the Korean Conflict he served in the Army.

    Richard owned and operated Kastel Slaughter House in Riga, a family business he took over from his father and expanded.  Richard loved his work and considered his customers his family.  He frequently donated services to 4-H and the Tecumseh American Legion.  Richard enjoyed gardening and raising cattle and chickens.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga.

    Joshua (Michelle) Kastel of Hudson and David (Heidi) Jordan of Blissfield were “his boys” who not only worked with him, but looked after him as well, and they survive. Also surviving Richard are many nieces and nephews including Steven (Bobbie) Kastel of Jasper.

    Funeral services were held Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield.

  • Margaret Ida Koppelman

    Margaret Ida (Bischoff) Koppelman age 98, died peacefully, Friday, May 30, 2013, at Kingston Memory Care of Sylvania, Ohio.

    She was born in Whiteford Township, Riga, Michigan, to Ida (Pollex) and George F. Bischoff on July 13, 1914. Margaret married Erwin Koppelman June 15, 1940, and celebrated 46 anniversaries before his death in 1986. She is survived by her four talented sons: Duane (Susan) Koppelman, of Tecumseh, Ronald (Cheryl) Koppelman, of Fort Recovery, Ohio, Richard Koppelman (Sue Sandlin), Toledo, Ohio, Gary (Beverly) Koppelman, of Blissfield; 14 beautiful grandchildren; 11 wonderful great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and 8 step-great-grandchildren; sister Yvonne McDole; sister-in-law Pat Bischoff; and many special nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; brothers, Loren and Lavern Bischoff; sisters, Emma Uloth, infant Blanche Bischoff and Gertrude McKimmey; and grandson, Joseph Koppelman.

    After graduating from Blissfield High School in 1932, she attended Lenawee County Normal School and received a teaching certificate. Her first job was teaching grades 1-8 for 10 years at Columbia School, Ottawa Lake. Once her sons started school, Mrs. Koppelman returned to teaching elementary education at Whiteford Agricultural Schools, Ottawa Lake, retiring in 1978, having taught a total of 32 years. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1964 in elementary education from Adrian College, Adrian. Upon retirement, Margaret volunteered in the Whiteford community for many years working on the Bicentennial Whiteford Township History Book, assembling the Whiteford School monthly newsletters, participating at the Bedford Senior Center, and enjoying judging crafts at the Monroe County Fair. She also received the Pearl Clover award for 15 years as a 4-H leader in Monroe County. Margaret was an active member for many years at St. Michael Lutheran Church and the Sara Ruth women’s circle. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, receiving a 25-year service award for retired schoolteachers and a member of the Toledo Area Weaver’s Guild, 1985-1986. At home, Margaret enjoyed weaving rag rugs on her floor loom; scrapbooking and baking cookies for her grandchildren.

    The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to all the caregivers who helped Margaret while she lived both in her home and at Kingston Memory Care, Sylvania, Ohio. Also thanks to Senior Independence Hospice of Toledo, Ohio, for their care, comfort, and support. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 8, at St. Michael Lutheran Church, Ottawa Lake, with Pastor Mark Gibbs, officiating. Family and friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania, Ohio, Friday, June 7 from 4-9 p.m. and noon-1 p.m. at the church before the service. Interment will be at Whiteford Union Cemetery.   • Glenda Shirley

    LAKELAND, FLA. — Glenda Shirley, 88, formerly of Deerfield and Manitou Beach, passed away, Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Lakeland Regional Hospital. She was born October 27, 1924, in Deerfield, Michigan, to the late William F. and Mary (Hegy) Schadewald. On November 7, 1942, Glenda married Darwin E. Shirley, and he survives. Glenda worked at Revco in Deerfield until they closed in 1968, and later at Goodwill, retiring in 1985. She was a former member of Hope Lutheran Church in Adrian, and a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Plant City, Fla. where she volunteered at their school. While living in Lenawee County, Glenda was active in the community volunteering for the American Red Cross and serving on the board of The United Way. She was known for her wonderful homemade pies and cinnamon rolls. In addition to Darwin, her husband of over 70 years, she is survived by their children, Linda Kelto and Darlene (Max) Davis both of Lakeland, Fla.; Patsy (Michael) Morast of Saline, and Lynn (Corrina) Shirley of Cohutta, Ga.; 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; and her siblings, Norman Schadewald and Maybelle (Gayln) Berry both of Blissfield; Donna Case and Charles (Fran) Schadewald both of Adrian and Stanley (Shirley) Schadewald of Tecumseh. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Shirley; granddaughter, Faith Morast; brothers William Schadewald Jr. and Don Schadewald; and sisters, Hazel Seegert, Mary Disbrow, and Carol Lash. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Adrian. Contributions may be made to Goodwill Industries.   • Todd Zimmerman

    RIGA:  Todd A. Zimmerman, age 41 of Riga, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, OH.  He was born August 4, 1971, in Toledo, Ohio to Donald H. and Nancy S. (Goll) Zimmerman.  On October 7, 1995, he married Kimberly “Kim” Renee Hollenbaugh in Blissfield and she survives.  Todd attended Baker College in Owosso.  He had been employed as a Pro Sales Consultant at Home Depot in Toledo. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga.  Todd supported his children through their many activities with sports and was known to his children’s friends as their biggest fan.  He enjoyed hunting with his father and farming part time, as well.  He adored his family and loved to travel with them.

    In addition to his wife, Kim, he is survived by his children, Brayden and Karter Zimmerman at home; his parents, Don Zimmerman of Riga and Nancy (John) Heckathorne of Riga; two sisters, Amy (Roger) Chrisman of Adrian and Kathy (Derek) DeCatur of Palmyra;  his brother-in-law, Bryan (Joyce) Hollenbaugh of Washington; his sister-in-law, Tami (Christopher) Magda of Jonesville, Michigan; his mother and father-in-laws, Jan (Rick) Kimling of Clayton and Dan (Carol) Hollenbaugh of Jonesville, Michigan; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Margaret Goll, and Alvin and Mabel Zimmerman; and an uncle, David Zimmerman in infancy.

    Funeral services for Todd will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Riga with Dianna Raine officiating.  Burial will be in Riga Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Riga.
