Anyone who has watched a Detroit Tigers, Red Wings or Pistons game probably has the jingle at the end of a commercial for a law office in Detroit constantly running through their head.
\u201cAll we do is win,\u201d the song goes.
In Blissfield, that moniker could be sung about Royal basketball senior Leigh Wyman.
In 56 career Lenawee County Athletic Association games, Wyman went 56-0.
In 102 career games that Wyman played in, Blissfield won 90 games.
\u201cAll she does is win.\u201d
Wyman was rewarded for all of those victories and her ability on the basketball court this week by being named to the Michigan Sportswriters Division 3 All-State Second Team.
\u201cLeigh has been the definition of a winner throughout her four-year varsity basketball career,\u201d Royal coach Ryan Gilbert said. \u201cFrom day one, she embodied all the qualities you look for in a competitor \u2013 toughness, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to her team. Leigh leads by example in everything she does, setting the standard with her work ethic and unselfish approach to the game.\u201d
This past season, Wyman averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 4.0 steals and was in the top 10 in blocked shots in the county with 15. She had a triple double and finished with 959 career points.
Wyman said the 100 games flew by quickly.
\u201cThe culture here makes everything fun,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a really good group all four years, which makes 100 games go by fast.\u201d
As a freshman, Wyman joined a talented group of upperclassmen. She was the sixth man on the team which reached the Breslin Center and played for a state championship. In that game, she was injured early and required knee surgery. She still never missed a game in her high school career.
She said going 56-0 in the league wasn\u2019t easy.
\u201cI think we just took it one game at a time,\u201d she said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t look ahead. Nothing was easy. The other teams didn\u2019t give it to us.\u201d
Gilbert said Wyman was never about piling up points or statistics.
\u201cAt times, she is selfless to a fault, always putting the success of her teammates and the program ahead of her own,\u201d he said. \u201cHer impact goes far beyond the box score, but even statistically, she stands among the very best \u2013 ranking in the top ten in every major category and finishing as Blissfield\u2019s all-time steals leader. Her defensive instincts and ability to create deflections and turnovers consistently changed the course of games.
\u201cShe leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a standard that will be incredibly difficult to replace. There will be a giant hole to fill next year, both on and off the court.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
