Special to The Advance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nick Wohlfarth began his journey with jujitsu just over one year ago, when his kids expressed interest in trying out the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jujitsu is a combat sport, where opponents choke, armbar, and grapple with each other, until someone taps out and submits. Matches can last upwards of 45 minutes, if both athletes are well disciplined. It\u2019s a sport that teaches composure, maturity, and endurance. Wohlfarth describes the sport as \u201csimilar to MMA\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wohlfarth conveyed that he is always willing to try new things; this unique opportunity was the perfect moment for him to exercise that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wohlfarth was already an incredibly talented athlete, playing football and competing in track & field in high school. He earned a scholarship to play collegiate football at Saginaw Valley State University. He also took up powerlifting in his 20s, being able to squat, bench-press, and deadlift a combined 1,800 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now living in Swanton, Ohio and searching for somewhere to begin taking lessons, he came across 419 Jiu Jitsu, where he and his boys still go to learn the sport. He spends upwards of four hours per week practicing, also competing in tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He recently competed in the NAGA championship, where contestants from all over North America came together to compete. Nick won five matches in a row, against different weight classes, to capture his first tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When talking about the challenge of facing different weight classes, Nick said, \u201cI like to go with the most competition, I don\u2019t like to do anything average.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shortly after winning, he signed up for the Arnold Classic competition in Columbus, Ohio. In this tournament, he won three matches to capture yet another title. His championship match was against an opponent who was undefeated up until that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wohlfarth mentioned how he has learned so much from jujitsu in just over a year of competing, with the main thing being able to \u201ccontrol your emotions\u201d.
