BASEBALL ACTION

In TCC baseball action, the Whiteford Bobcats held on for a 3-2 victory over rival Madison last Wednesday.

The Britton Deerfield Patriots were defeated 8-0 by Summerfield.

SOFTBALL ACTION

The Lady Bobcats of Whiteford opened up the softball season winning a double-header against Madison.

TRACK: Blissfield and Whiteford; April 9 edition

Blissfield’s Tyler Fall runs for the Royals.

Blissfield and Whiteford men and women competed at a four-way meet April 1 to begin the outdoor track season. Blissfield women dominated the day overall, however Miranda Johnson from Whiteford was the top individual with three first-place finishes and a team victory as part of the winning 4 x 100 meter Bobcat relay team.

Blissfield women won the meet 90-28 over Whiteford. In team scoring for all four teams in the meet, the Lady Royals came out on top. Blissfield had 71, Summerfield 57, Lenawee Christian 24 and Whiteford 22 points.

The Blissfield men’s track team finished second overall at the Summerfield four-way meet April 1.  Summerfield, last year’s Division 4 regional team champion was first with 90 points, Blissfield second with 38 and Lenawee Christian and Whiteford each had 24 points.

Local school officials see improvements in MEAP results

Local school district officials report they were pleased with results that came back on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program testing.

Blissfield superintendent Scott Moellenberndt said that the scores in the eighth grade mathematics and science categories by Blissfield students were one of the highlights of the MEAP testing. Moellenberndt said Blissfield improved in 13 of the 18 categories of the test from the third through the ninth grade.

Both Whiteford and Britton Deerfield cite continuity and improvement.

Lower revenues may singe Blissfield Township Fire Dept. budget

A decrease in revenue as the result of fewer ambulance runs projected for the Blissfield Township Fire Department as well as the cost of a new roof could put a strain on the Blissfield Township Fire Department budget.

The township is expecting about $37,400 less in revenues than last year. Last year the township saw a sharp decline in ambulance revenue and officials have figured accordingly reducing the revenue line item by $28,681. It is anticipated the township will collect $64,319 in revenue for the ambulance.

Fire crews called to anhydrous leak Sunday night

Leaking anhydrous ammonia resulted in a Blissfield Township fire crew being dispatched to the Crop Production Services location on Silberhorn Highway Sunday evening. 
Blissfield Fire Chief Gary Crist said crews were called out to the location at 8:23 p.m. Three small tanks were leaking, he said.
It is believed there was a problem with a shut-off valve caused by the weather, he said.
Fire department personnel waited for CPS employees to arrive before suiting up in self-contained breathing apparatus and shutting off the valve.
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.

Jeanette Ogden

Jeanette Ogden, age 96 of Blissfield, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility with her family by her side. She was born May 2, 1917, in Blissfield, Michigan, to the late Edward and Madge (Smith) Brown. Jeanette was a member of the graduating Class of 1935 from Blissfield High School. On August 21, 1947, she was married to Richard Ogden, and they celebrated almost 62 years of marriage before his death in 2009. Jeanette worked at Tibbs Brothers IGA and the Gambles store. She was a lifetime member of the Blissfield American Legion Auxilliary. She is survived by her children: James (Laura) Marsh of Toledo; Jacqueline O’Neill of Bradenton, FL; Robert (Cindy) Ogden of Adrian; and Deborah (Robert) Pooley of Blissfield; three grandchildren, several great grandchildren and a sister, Lois “Kathleen” Sheldon of Blissfield. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Macklin, Harold, Lawrence, and Edward Jr; a sister, Gladys Goetz; and a daughter in infancy. Visitation for Jeanette will take place at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. immediately followed by a graveside service at Pleasant View Cemetery. River Raisin may be at high point

According to forecaster from the National Weather Service the River Raisin may have reached its high point Friday morning, March 21, just inches below what would be considered a minor flood. According to the NWS website the river was at 682.45 feet above sea level at 7 a.m. Friday. Flooding occurs at 683 feet.

Water rose over the banks into Bachmayer Park late last weekend and some standing water is visible in Ellis Park as well in the middle of the village. Forecasters say the water levels will remain fairly constant through Monday before gradually decreasing throughout the week.

Lenawee Emergency Management Director Curtis  Parsons said the slow thaw has been favorable.  Reports of some flooding has been reported downstream closer to the City of Monroe where the river flows into Lake Erie.

Detroit Consortium tames Bobcats in Regional final

The Whiteford Bobcats, after defeating Clinton in the Regional semifinal Monday, found themselves against Detroit Consortium for the Regional crown Wednesday, March 12, and falling by a score of 91-61.

Lenawee County copes with mid-March snowstorm

The Lenawee County Road Commission and the Michigan Department of Transportaton are getting multiple reports of impassable roads from Lenawee County 911 dispatch this afternoon. Road crews as well as police and fire departments are also reporting whiteout conditions as they respond to calls and accidents.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that is scheduled to expire at 3 p.m. but conditions remain very hazardous. A Blissfield police officer on his way to Adrian discovered a vehicle in the ditch at on US223 near Ogden Highway in Palmyra Township at approximately 2 p.m.. Police and fire crews were also responding to a multi-car crash at Carleton Road and M156 in Dover Township about 11 miles west of Adrian at 2:30 p.m. and were having difficulty with road conditions.
Lenawee County Road Commission Operations Manager said Tuesday that road crews would remain on duty clearing roads over night tonight if conditions warranted.
Winds are currently 28 mph coming out of the north in Blissfield. And are expected to slowly decline to 10 mph by midnight.
Water levels on the River Raisin at Blissfield have risen slightly since Monday.  According to the National Weather Service the water levelwas at 676.75 feet as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. Action stage is 681 feet.
