RIGA – A possible medical emergency caused a semi-truck driver to lose control of his vehicle Wednesday, causing an accident involving hazardous materials.
Work crews were still at the scene Monday (May 11), working to clean up the ditch and surrounding area where the truck came to rest.
The semi was hauling a flatbed trailer with 22 industrial-sized electric transformers.
“We treated it as a hazardous material incident,” said Riga Township Fire Chief Mike Norman. “We did not know what kind of liquid was contained in the transformers.”
The area was quickly corded off with hazardous material bags used to seal the area that the transformers came in contact with.
The driver was transported to a nearby hospital and reportedly was in stable condition as of Friday.
The Michigan State Police, Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Transportation and Madison Township’s HazMat team assisted at the scene.
The truck was towed from the scene and the owner of the vehicle was tasked with cleaning up the debri, under the direction of MDOT.
For a portion of time Monday morning, the road was reduced to one lane in each direction as the cleanup continued.
