St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Blissfield celebrates century of service

When the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1965 it was likely still the newest church in town, according to some long-time members. But as the congregation now celebrates its 100th anniversary there are a few churches younger.
The congregation is hoping that many come back to the church for the anniversary program and chicken dinner on Sunday, May 17. Several invitations were sent out to former and current members and the public is invited.
Parishioners Bonnie Kupa and Judy MacBeth along with friend Erika Whitney have created a quilt. MacBeth said it is a membership covenant renewal quilt. Members will sign a new covenant and their names will be pinned around the center of it and displayed in the church.
To celebrate the 100-year anniversary there will be one service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with Bishop Kreiss of the Southeast Michigan Synod preaching and Pastor Leking and intern Ben Austin assisting him. After the service there will be the chicken dinner followed by a brief program in the sanctuary. Several church members have gathered items and programs over the years that will be displayed as well.

Two of three pipeline surveys to occur

Two of three landowners who had objections to allowing Rover Pipeline officials on their property will have to allow the surveys. A third case against landowners Dale and Dee Warner was dropped after a survey of land in Franklin Township was completed.
Both Dover Township Farmer Arnoud Schot and Franklin Township farmer Gregg Hardy objected to allowing the company come onto their property to survey the property .
Rover Pipeline is a proposed 42-inch natural gas transmission line project that would transport the commodity from the Marcellus shale region of Appalachia through Ohio to mid -Michigan.
A similar project, NEXUS is being investigated for the eastern part of Lenawee County. Rover Pipeline would enter Michigan east of Morenci and traverse the county north and south west of Adrian.
Lenawee County Circuit Court Judge Margaret Noe ruled in favor of Rover in the two cases stating the law was on their side.

Blissfield to fly its own flag

For the first time in Blissfield’s 19-year history it has an official flag. Five members of the village council unanimously approved the new banner at the April 27 meeting. Trustees Art Weeber ad Mike Gunter were absent.
Using design elements chosen last year by Arnett Muldrow and Associates as part of the Blissfield Main Street image and branding exercise. The Main Street Program was the recipient of a branding services grant from the Michigan Main Street Center.
The flag, a dark blue, says “Blissfield” in scripted lettering in a yellow across it. It includes the newly adopted log that shows a sunburst with farm fields on it .
Blissfield Village Administrator Jim Wonacott said the village will initially have a flag for both the council chambers and one to adorn the flagpole in front of the lane Street village office. Plans are to have the flags ordered soon.
